Grey BPM.104

The BPM.104 is a fully automatic, versatile tool, that provides accurate BPM information for a wide range of music styles, from simple 4/4 Dance music to more intricate Hip-Hop and Break Beat styles. It can be connected to any headphone signal, line level output or drum mic, and adjusts automatically to the input signal level that is present.
Simple Operation

Just plug it in and you're away - there are no knobs to adjust! The BPM.104 connects to your mixer's headphone output, and displays the BPM of the signal present on the headphone cue channel. Flip your headphone cue from one deck to the other and compare readings. When they match, your matched. Any pitch adjustments made will show on the '104 display in a second or two.

The 104's automatic gain circuitry makes sure the system has the right audio level to operate correctly, so you only need to concentrate on one thing - the perfect mix!

Large LED Accurate to 0.1 BPM

The '104 comprises a large 210 LED Dot Matrix display, with its four-digit readout allowing for a visual accuracy of 0.1 BPM.

The display features a beat marker that will flash with the most reliable beat of the audio signal.

An Audio and Peak Level marker displays the audio level once it has self-adjusted the gain level.

Portable, Lightweight & Robust

The BPM.104 is intended as a portable tool and, as such is small and lightweight.

Yet the '104 is also extremely robust, ensuring it can withstand the day-to-day bump and grind associated with the setting and packing up of DJ equipment.

A protective slipcase is provided to protect the screen from scratches and abrasion while on the move; ideal if you're running from set to set.

The Drummer's Companion

The versatile BPM.104 unit is also a perfect tool for drummers to maintain an accurate and consistent drumbeat.

Simply mic your kick drum and plug the mic output straight to the BPM104 for real time beat information.

Mini scoop on a useful tool. Grey Innovation’s BPM104 Beat Counter.

If you need to add an exact BPM counter with a big display, but a minimum footprint in your setup, you’ll want to check out the BPM104 Beat Counter from Grey Innovation. This tiny, shiny silver (Aluminum extrusion) tool fits in your pocket (in a leather slip case) and plugs right into your mixer’s headphone output. It comes with a 1/4” to 1/8” adapter and special splitter cable so you can plug the counter and your headphones in at the same time. You can also plug a 1/8” headphone plug directly into the counter’s headphone output.

The manufacturer claims “a typical acquisition time of 2 seconds” for sensing the tempo. While not an absolutely scientific measurement, my chronograph seemed to confirm this figure. More importantly, it was consistent. I threw a variety of beats at the BPM104 in quick succession to see if I could trip it up, but it always provided a fast and exact reading. The unit’s decimal point resolution will be attractive to hair-splitting mixologists. The most useful feature for me, with my less-than-20/20 vision was the 3/4" inch-high, bright red numbers of the LED.

You don't have to be a DJ nerd or have a pocket protector to carry around the BPM104 from Grey. This small, handheld device is just the tool you need to add to your gig bag and it comes with it's own leather case. Being handheld and small are just two of the amazing features I noticed when checking out the BPM 104.

In the past, BPM counters have taken up a full rack space on your case to get the features the BPM104 exhibited. This small, 5"x 2" metal encased BPM counter was a breeze to use. Out of the box, I had the unit plugged in and operating in less than 5 minutes. No installation was required, no patch cords, no taking the back of my gear case off. Using the innovative cord Grey thoughtfully included, I just plugged the unit into the headphone jack of my mixer and plugged my headphone into it. From the headphone jack, the cable went to one side of the BPM104 unit and the power adapter attached to the other side. Immediately the unit sprang to life.

Comparing the accuracy of the BPM104, I used various mix discs that had the BPM104 already calibrated and listed on their J-cards. The BPM104 scored an 18 out of 20 in tracking the tempos. In a rapid fire, the BPM104 kept track at a good pace as I moved from track to track averaging only a few seconds from music to tempo calculation.

The size of this unit is a major plus for DJs on the move. It's stylish extruded aluminum case and ¾ inch red designer LED display give it a techie look and should make it a hit with DJs wanting something that is not only a cool, but very usable tool.

One other tip. For those that are looking to catalog their tunes by BPM using their computer, the BPM104 is completely compatible with your PC and comes with an adapter for 1/8th inch headphone jacks.

By now, anyone with even a passing interest in Australian dance music should be familiar with Andy Van. To many he's probably best known as one half of the hugely successful Madison Avenue alongside Cheyne Coates. Their first single sold over a million copies worldwide and went to Number #1 on both the Australian and UK charts. However, Andy's entry into dance music came as a DJ and this aspect remains
the cornerstone of his career - the thing that keeps him intimately involved with club culture. His extensive DJ work over the last 14 years, combined with his acclaimed production skills and his role as part of the A&R team at Vicious Vinyl and Vicious Grooves has made him a well known and respected figure in dance music circles.

"I'm a real gadget fan and a shiny silver bullet shaped object caught my eye when record shopping. It was a BPM counter from Grey Innovation. I loved the funky look and feel of it and the extremely bright and readable LED display is a real plus. So I bought it on the spot.

"I then took it back to the Vicious Studio and set upon the job finding out how good it was, and did it actually do a good job of working out the BPM of records ?? Much to my satisfaction - it did! Not only did it work out easy house based records, I found out it can calculate more complex tempos, even from 1950s Jazz records!

"I have previously looked around at other BPM counters and found standalone units are available in the UK and US. However, they were MUCH more expensive and don't look anywhere near as good as the BPM 104. For me it is my essential tool when BPMing my records!"

Almost all DJ equipment is manufactured in Asia, and often by a US company. This combination can result in higher product prices once line production has gone from Asia to the US and back to Australia. There are very few products manufactured within Australia, but one Aussie company (Grey Innovation) is trying to change that with their new BPM.104.

The BPM.104 is an external BPM counter that's very easy to use and is extremely affordable. It works by connecting the unit to your headphone output and plugging our headphones into the unit. It can calculate BPM's between a range of 80 to 199 BPM within 2 to 4 seconds and is accurate to 0.1 of a BPM. Any Adaptors you might need to connect the unit to your system are supplied as well as the mains power adaptor and a handy carry-case.

The BPM.104 is less than 15cm long and 5cm wide, but has a 210 LED dot matrix graphical display to produce a 4 digit BPM readout (one decimal place). It also features an audio level indicator and a peak marker to show the maximum audio output. This is an extremely good unit that is almost half the price of its nearest competitor. The fact that its Australian made is an extra bonus!
