The DJ1 is designed specifically for use by musicians, DJs and pro sound engineers. The closed-back (sealed) DJ1 have a full if slightly over-emphasized bass response with recessed mids and highs that mask some detail resolution throughout the upper mids/highs. Although lacking the organically super-smooth transition between frequency ranges, the punchy kick in the bass is great for hip-hop DJ's. Not well-suited for demanding audiophile-types looking for superb high-frequency extension but great in loud, noisy club environments where bass is king.
These full-size headphones are constructed with Ultrasone's plastic polymer headbands with hinged earpieces and earpads so you can fold the headphones for portabilty and ease of storage. The earcups swivel away without having to necessarily remove the headphones from your head, perfect for DJ mixing with one ear. The medium-size circumaural earpieces are covered in a black pleather-type material that is also used under the headband for maximum comfort. "The ULTRASONE HFI-650 headphones come with a nice protective sleeve. The shells of the headphones are big, so they fit comfortably around my ears. I liked this, since headphones that are smaller hurt my ears after a while. I used the 650's to listen to the final mixes turned in by my class of engineering students. The headphones allowed me to evaluate the mixes easily. The ULTRASONES had good stereo imaging and had a nice punchy sound. The high end was clear, but not overly bright, and the low end was clear and defined. As a test, I compared the headphones to a pair of Sony MDR-7506's, which I've found to be favorites of many of the artists I've recorded. Artists like them for the definition and the clarity of the high end, which helps them to hear their own articulation when they sing in the studio. Musictech College faculty and students are abuzz with interest in the ULTRASONE HFI 650 headphones.I have compared them with many other great headphones and other binaural listening devices including the Stax Professional Earspeakers. The HFI 650s are revelatory. The low end is solid, but not pushed or punchy. The high end is clear and clean without being harsh or gritty. Some of the people I have shared these with believe them to be pushy in the low end, but I think this is because they are used to listening on monitors that don't reach down below 60 HZ (almost all nearfields when no sub is used). I work in a room with a calibrated Blue Sky 5.1 speaker system with a bass management controller, so I have heard many a "great" mix come up heavier in the bottom than the mix engineer may have originally intended. With today's trend towards a crossover into a subwoofer in 2 channel stereo or 6 channel surround, it is great to have a set of headphones which actually have allowed me to reference the low end of my mixes with such accuracy. Mixing a two hour show can be very hard on the ears. Most headphones cause a lot of fatigue. Also, most of the time you could say that mixing off of studio monitors is preferred over mixing in headphones. The ULTRASONE DVD Headphones has changed my opinion on both points. The range, width, and low pressure make listening to headphones over a long period of time a pleasure.Some how you FEEL the lows like you would on studio monitors, and mids and highs are absolutely natural. The best way I can describe this is: Listening to bass guitar thought a SVT classic head with no speaker cab though the DVDs sounds and FEELS like you are standing next to an SVT head through the 8x10 cab. These headphones allowed me to mix with way more detail in my stereo image. When you pan something just "a little left" you can hear it, when you have a stereo signal it not only sounds "wide" but also all the detail in-between is there. To sum it up, mixing on these headphones is just pleasant. The other night I was driving to my gig, I was going to mix a Howie Day broadcast for Nashville Sunday Night, I realized that I had left my headphones at my last gig. I had to do sound check in my old sony 7506's. After a 30 min sound check my ears were exhausted, not to mention I hated my mix. "They're absolutely top notch. We've been using the 650s for production on the road and they sound amazing. Great response on all frequencies and you can't hear a peep even if you're sitting right next to the guy with the things turned up super loud... They're also quite comfortable. Which brings us to the 550s, sound quality is top and the bass response is heavier than the 650s (nice feature for the djs), but the best part is the physical design. They're just freaking comfortable and lightweight. Fine to wear full on your head, one side on / off, or around the neck. "I've been a part of making records for over 38 years. During this time of course, I have worn a lot of headphones...starting with the single phones that were used in the 60's. Recording technology continued to grow and more and more producers and engineers realized that there was a correlation between how well the musicians and singers could hear, to the type of performances that were gotten, and headphones continued to improve.Being a drummer who at times is called on to play loud, leakage into the headphones from my own instrument has been a problem and I always need to turn the volume of the headphone box up in order to hear the other instruments on the session. Certain phones were better in this regard, namely the AKG 240's and certain phones, like the Fostex (while being very industrial) are absolutely awful concerning leakage and not being able to keep them on your head while playing hard. After all this experience, I can say that the ULTRASONE HFI-550 headphones are without a doubt the best headphones I have ever used. The isolation is amongst the best. Yes, there are phones made specifically for isolation problems, however, most of these phones use components that sonically aren't close to what you hear with ULTRASONE. I have also been able to turn the volume down at every studio that I have been at with these phones...they are definitely more efficient and I can actually hear the bottom end of my kick drum and bass. I believe that the offset speaker placement has contributed to something very interesting: on two different sessions, two engineers and I have noticed that the singers pitch center became better after switching to my ULTRASONES . It was most amazing. There is really something to this offset design.
And so, to sum up: I believe that ULTRASONE headphones are simply the best. I now carry my own phones to every studio and without fail when a person tries my phones, they are blown away. Thanks ULTRASONE ...I have been waiting my whole career for headphones like these.”
ULTRASONE WARRANTY INFORMATION:
Ultrasone of America LLC (the “Company”) warrants Ultrasone products (the “Product”) against defects in material or workmanship in the Product’s headband, earcups, cables (including adapters) and internal components for a period of two (2) years from the date of original retail purchase excluding iCans and the HFI-450. Limited warranty for iCans (including white, Naos, Okta and Aurum) and the HFI-450 will be one (1) year from date of original retail purchase. One year warranty for iCans will take effect on 7/1/07 and apply to all iCans purchased on or after that date. If this Product is determined to be defective during the warranty period, the Company will, at its sole option, (1) repair the defective Product at no charge, using new or refurbished replacement parts, (2) exchange the defective Product with a Company product that is new or that has been manufactured from new or serviceable used parts and that is at least functionally equivalent to the original Product, or (3) refund the original purchase price paid by you for the Product. When a Product or part thereof is exchanged, any replacement item becomes your property and the replaced item becomes the Company’s property. When a refund is given, your Product becomes the Company’s property.
What Is Not Covered by This Limited Warranty
As indicated above, only the Product’s headband, earcups, cables (including adapters) and internal components are covered by this warranty. The Product’s other components or accessories including earpads, headpad, carrying bag, demo CD, etc. are not covered under the limited warranty. In addition, this limited warranty does not apply to any non-Company hardware product even if packaged or sold with the Product.
This limited warranty does not apply: (1) to damage caused by accident, abuse, misuse, negligence, act of God, misapplication, or any non-Company product; (2) to damage caused by service performed by anyone other than the Company; (3) to a product or a part that has been modified or altered without the written permission of the Company; or (4) with respect to any defect which is attributable to any failure or damage which is beyond the reasonable control of the Company. It will be the sole discretion of the Company whether or not damage is accidental and will not be covered by the warranty.
This limited warranty applies only to new Products purchased from Ultrasone of America LLC or an authorized reseller. Warranty coverage will be provided only to the original retail purchaser. Transfer of any Product through any unauthorized distributor or retail seller renders this limited warranty null and void. Any Product sold by a private party or unauthorized distributor or retail seller is sold on an “as is” and “with all faults” basis, and as such the entire risk as to the quality and performance of such Product will be with the buyer. It will be the sole discretion of the Company to say whether or not a distributor, retail seller or other outlet in an authorized reseller or not.
Making a Warranty Claim and Returning a Product
If you desire to make a warranty claim, you must first obtain an RMA (a return merchandise authorization number) from the Company. You must obtain an RMA before the two (2) year warranty period expires. To obtain an RMA, you must fill out the repair form located on our website (http://www.ultrasoneusa.com/repair-form.php). The Company will then issue an RMA with all necessary instructions for returning the product. This number will be used as reference for this service issue and should be noted in all correspondence with the Company about said service issue.
Once you have obtained an RMA, you must return to the Company the Product for which you are seeking warranty service within thirty (30) days after the date you are provided you with the RMA. After thirty (30) days the RMA will expire and you must contact the Company in order to obtain a new RMA. Products shipped with an expired RMA will be refused and returned to the sender at their cost. Please return the Product in its original packaging with all of the following: (1) RMA clearly marked on the returned package; (2) a receipt or bill of sale showing proof of purchase from an authorized retail seller; (3) a copy of the email sent to you with your RMA and contact information; (4) a check made out to Ultrasone of America for fifteen (15) dollars to cover the cost of return shipping.
You are solely responsible for all costs associated with returning the Product to the Company, and the Company will not reimburse or compensate you for any such costs. This includes shipping, insurance, delivery confirmation, customs, duties and any other charges.
Note: If your headphone is found to be defective with the first thirty (30) days after purchase, we will wave the shipping costs and issue a return tag for the product in question. Proof of purchase within the last thirty (30) days must be provided before the return tag is issued.
After you have received an RMA from the Company and you have returned the Product to the Company for warranty service, the Company will determine if the Product is defective and whether or not it is still covered under the warranty. If the Product is determined to be out of warranty, the Company will contact you with an estimate before starting repairs.
Limitations of Liability
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, THIS LIMITED WARRANTY AND THE REMEDIES SET FORTH ABOVE ARE EXCLUSIVE AND IN LIEU OF ALL OTHER WARRANTIES, REMEDIES AND CONDITIONS, WHETHER ORAL OR WRITTEN, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED. THE COMPANY AND ITS AFFILIATES, PARENTS, SUBSIDIARIES AND SUPPLIERS SPECIFICALLY DISCLAIM ANY AND ALL IMPLIED WARRANTIES, INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. IF SUCH IMPLIED WARRANTIES CANNOT LAWFULLY BE DISCLAIMED OR EXCLUDED UNDER APPLICABLE LAW, THEN TO THE EXTENT POSSIBLE ANY CLAIMS UNDER SUCH IMPLIED WARRANTIES SHALL EXPIRE ON EXPIRATION OF THE WARRANTY PERIOD.
NEITHER THE COMPANY NOR ANY OF ITS AFFILIATES, PARENTS, SUBSIDIARIES OR SUPPLIERS SHALL BE LIABLE FOR ANY SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES CAUSED BY THE USE OR MISUSE OF, OR INABILITY TO USE, THE PRODUCT, OR ARISING FROM ANY BREACH OF ANY EXPRESS OR IMPLIED WARRANTY, REGARDLESS OF THE LEGAL THEORY ON WHICH THE CLAIM IS BASED, AND EVEN IF THE COMPANY OR ANY OF ITS AFFILIATES, PARENTS, SUBSIDIARIES OR SUPPLIERS HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.
Some states do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, or allow limitations on how long an implied warranty lasts, so the above limitations may not apply to you. This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may have other rights which vary from state to state.
No person or entity, other than the Company through its authorized officers, is authorized to make any modification, extension, or addition to this warranty.
