VESTAX PMC-500

The VESTAX PMC-500 is one of two 19" club/install mixers released this year by Vestax. It is loaded with features that can not be found on any other mixer. At the request of club owners, installation designers, club techs and DJs around the world, Vestax has created a high quality installation mixer perfect for any environment (size and or use) and for any user (type, style & knowledge). With five dedicated line channels and 2 MIC/line channels it is perfect for not only dance dedicated venues but also for bars, clubs or other like premises where the music needs change nightly. Five input PGMs and two dedicated mic/line PGMs
Each PGM has inputs for one phono and two line inputs allowing for a total of 5 phonos, 2 mics and 12 line inputs. Each of the five main line PGMs on the PMC-500 has its own printed circuit board. Essentially this means that each board has more physical space on which to print a more open and clean circuit. For a circuit this equates to improved sound quality and much improved reduction in noise and cross talk. Furthermore, because each board is separate per PGM, servicing is a lot easier.

Three Band Isolators per Channel
The PMC-500 uses three band isolators per PGM that offers 100% infinity cut and +4dB of boost. This is an EQ section that DJs dream about. The +4dB of boost is just enough gain to allow the DJ to emphasize the frequencies without overdriving and creating distortion. Club owners also appreciate the +4dB of gain because DJs will not do any damage to their expensive sound system.

Seven Segment LED Meters per PGM
The PMC-500 has extremely accurate meters on the individual PGM inputs along the left side of each isolator. Meters are essential for the professional “Mix” DJ. It allows the DJ to correct and match levels between records or CDs. The DJ wants the music to change when crossfading between records and have the volume remain the same.

Tight Torque Input Faders
The PMC-500 is equipped with the world’s best faders. These are 60mm tight torque VCA faders that offer the most accurate fade and smoothest feel on the market. The PMC-500 also offers an optional rotary kit (DF-500) for the DJs and clubs that prefer rotary knobs. The crossfader is a third generation PCV fader with curve control. The crossfader is user replaceable, but with a life expectancy of 2,000,000 passes it pretty much guarantees that it should never need replacing.

Input and Output Attenuation
All PGM inputs and master outputs have selectable gain attenuation switches of 0dB or -10dB allowing the club owner or club tech to cut up to -20dB. This is a very important feature to have on mixers that will be used in very loud environments like clubs or bars. They can reduce the risk of damage to their sound system by limiting the amount of gain. DJs are notorious for running in the red. These attenuation options will prohibit DJs from over-gaining.

Fire Alarm Mute Switch
Another important feature that can only be found on the PMC-500 is a “Fire Alarm Mute Switch”. In order to ensure venues meet modern safety standards the PMC-500 has incorporated this system. This unique system can be found beneath the power switch on the rear panel. It connects directly to the club’s smoke alarm system and when activated, it gently brings down the PGM volumes leaving the mic on for emergency instructions.

1. WHAT IS THE ”SECURITY OR PROTECT FUNCTION” THAT IS ON THE PMC-500?
The inbuilt limitation is used to prevent the input gain signal from being overloaded. Once this signal is overloaded at the input gain stage, it is virtually impossible to correct any distortion further down the audio chain. The PMC 500 has built in limiting switches which can only be accessed from within the mixer or from the rear. In the same line of thought, the EQ section only can have a +4dB boost, leaving just the infinite cut feature. Also the output levels can be individualy attenuated. Ultimately, these features are designed to prevent system overload and possible damage to PA equipment,making the PMC-500 attractive to venue owners and large PA hire companies.

2. WHAT IS THE CROSSFADER CURVE USED FOR?
Crossfader curves are common on hip-hop mixers, but are only found on higher end installation mixers. In a beatmixing application (as opposed to a scratching / turntablist application), this control is used to taper beatmixing curves, often during a mix itself, where the levels between the tracks will change but the output level from the mixer will stay the same.

3. WHAT IS THE MASTER LOOP USED FOR?
This feature is used for connection to external ”mastering” tools during a performance. Often these processors are carried by the artists themselves, hence the placement of the input and output connectors on the top panel. An example of such a unit is the Vestax DCR 1200 PRO 4 band isolator. The PGM I/O connectors on the front panel below the input faders offer the same feature for each individual channel, separate from the stereo effects send and return within the mixer.
